spanglish salad
I was too lazy to make the Spanglish sandwich (world’s greatest sandwich). Rather, I didn’t want to put it between 2 pieces of bread then get the muck all over my hands and whatever plate I was using and have to wash up later. So I tried making a salad. It actually turned out quite deliciously! Here’s what I did: - Cut up 3 leaves of butter lettuce and a tomato and put into a...

Sandwich Challenge
I wanted to make a sandwich one evening, so I bought an uncut loaf of bread. Thing is, these things happen where I make one or two sandwiches, then the bread molds because I left it in its bag and etc etc etc. So this time, I am going to make a sandwich menu, and I will eat a sandwich every day until I finish my bread (which shouldn’t take more than 5 days). Because I am only feeding...

so, about that umami burger...
i don’t particularly care for it. it’s oily and has very little veggies. also, my parmesan crisp is always soggy, and they don’t allow extra crispiness. the mushrooms barely exist, the tomato is gone in one bite. sigh. but it tastes good, for what it’s worth. what is worth getting, in my opinion, are the fries. because of umami ketchup. i can’t get enough of this...

(Lemon) Yogurt Cake
So, I moved. And with moving comes displacement, boxes, storing stuff in boxes… See where this is heading? It is awfully difficult to cook and bake when all of your beloved equipment is in a storage facility (ie. my cousin’s room) 40 miles away. So, when the itch to cook or bake comes along… you must find a simple, easy recipe. And this (lemon) yogurt cake is just that.  ...

go make this. now.
i don’t even really like chocolate all that much, but this… this is amazing, delicious, raw and (almost) vegan. just… go make it. if you’re in orange county and need cashew butter, i’ll loan you a few tablespoons just so you can try it. heck, use peanut butter instead. nom.    nom.      nom.

natural (and maybe organic?) cough remedy!
i had a nice long post, but my internet has been an absolute nightmare lately and never saved my post as tumblr has so kindly started doing, so i just have this. [insert immune system attraction anecdote here] in a container, layer thinly sliced onions, garlic, and honey. squeeze in the juice of a lemon. let it marinate for a little, preferably in the refrigerator, and partake occasionally. it...

perfect potstickers
perfect potstickers? every time? yes. every time. unless you use the force required to scrape black cooked stuff off a burned pot. so. here we go. 1. put the potstickers (assume they’re frozen) in a non-stick pan or shallow pot, flappy part pointing up. fill the pan about halfway with water, and fire up the stove on medium-high-high. place the pan on the stove and cover with a lid that...

cravings
sometimes i want nothing more than zucchini. zucchini ribbons with some macadamia nut oil, salt and lime. pure and simple. other times, i want the very best in raw vegan smoothies. my food cravings are usually vegetable-related. vegetarian. vegan. “healthy,” for all intents and purposes. but goddamn, i really want kfc extra crispy chicken with mashed potatoes right now. with a side of...

the art of the boiled egg
my friend just stopped by and handed me a medium-boiled egg. which i immediately peeled and poured soy sauce over and spooned into my mouth and moaned in ecstacy as the not-quite solid yolk smeared creamily over my tongue, mixing the unique saltiness of the soy sauce with the richness of the custardy yolk. delightful. 50% raw veganism, i have failed you. eggs are just too sexy.

tomato soup
one of my favorite meals when everything else seems dull, bleh and just plain unappetizing is tomato soup. you eat it with grilled cheese sandwiches, and it is delightful. it is especially yummy on a rainy day, or on a cold day, wrapped around blankets and snuggling up next to someone while you dip your sandwich into the soup and watch movies together. want your significant other to love you more?...

soy yogurt
i blame my friend’s mother for all this. one day i was a carefree girl with little interest in sugary-sweet american yogurt, and now… i make my own damn yogurt! that’s right! i can make my own yogurt! and you can too! it’s friggen easy. and i think soy yogurt is the easiest because all you have to do is shake and go. so now, i have a cup (or two) of soy yogurt a day with...

corn cheese (옥수수 치즈)
this shiz is gooooood. eat with soju or however you want; just make sure that it’s at night and that you’re craving munchies. 옥수수 치즈 canned corn, drained mayo milk and sugar (or condensed milk) shredded cheese optional: salt preheat your oven to 400F. mix the corn, mayo, milksugar and salt together in an oven-friendly dish (i use the lovely cherry red le creuset a friend gave to me)....

reine claude (green gage) plum jam
this morning i went to the farmer’s market with a friend. it was a hot day. as we perused the rows of wares, i searched the fruit stalls for green gage plums. i heard they were tart, sweet, tiny and perfect for jam making. but, i couldn’t find any! we had scoured nearly the whole market and not a small tiny green gage plum to be found! as we neared the end of the last row, i stopped in...

cherry frangipane tart
i was watching mike rowe’s “dirty jobs” last night, and it inspired me. not the jelly beans that tasted like disgusting feet nor the blueberry picking girls, but the old old ladies making blueberry pie. i later told my mother as she was brushing her teeth and putting away leftovers that i wanted to make a pie. she scoffed at me. and i did make a pie. well, a tart, but the only...

i think whole foods is slipping on their cheese quality. i bought some mimolette and it doesn’t taste right. it tastes… young. naive. less than demi-vieille… and it’s pretty bright orange. i want my old cheese! i want it old, dark, pruny, and hard!

marcella hazan's tomato sauce
i didn’t realize it until i was rummaging through the kitchen to find something to eat for dinner. really, all we have is a freezer filled with (ge) meat from the asian supermarket, lots of eggs, milk, a costo pack of unsalted butter, and some cans of tomatoes. i already had eggs for dinner the previous night, so i turned to smitten kitchen for inspiration. and found this: that’s...

this would be the first time i actually have a recipe to share that i developed! kidding, it’s actually a spin-off of this one, but with tweaks for the person who wants to keep things simple. no cream, less sugar, less gelatin, less steps, less time. everybody wins! serves anywhere from 4 to 8 depending on your bowls time: <30 minutes, excluding chill time caramel 2/3 cup sugar 1/4 cup...
